Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker DCM2500B SmartBrew CoffeemakerCustomer Review: good coffee, flimsy construction Summary: 2 Stars
Bought this unit based on recommendation in "a major consumer magazine". It makes good coffee, no complaints there, but it is very flimsy. One of the plastic hinges on the top of the unit broke off the first time I used it, and the top of the carafe pops off with any handling at all (though it easily snaps back on). I generally only make coffee on weekends, but if you're going to use it all the time, you might want to consider a more stoutly constructed unit. Two smaller things: the red digital time display is extremely bright, annoyingly so for me but might be a plus for others. And the auto-shutoff on the warmer is two hours, shorter than I would prefer but again might be preferable for some users.
Customer Review: Fast, efficient coffee-maker Summary: 4 Stars
Like the big 12 cup capacity. Like the no drip, easy pour wide spout glass carafe. Like the fairly rapid coffee production. REALLY like the "steal a cup while it's brewing" feature, which spring-plugs the drip hole to the carafe when the carafe is removed while you pour yourself a cup while brewing is still going on. (You have about a minute before the drips overfill the coffee filter area, and that's enough time.) Hot plate turns off after a few hours, so no danger of boiling dry and ruining the glass carafe. I would rate it 5 stars only if it tasted like Starbucks, but nothing in this price range does this (nor do most in higher price ranges.) But it makes a pretty decent cup of coffee, too.
Customer Review: Love it! Summary: 5 Stars
We are big coffee drinkers and have several pots a day. We've gone through many brands of coffeemakers of all prices and types, but have found the perfect one for us. Several months ago, we were flying 1200 miles from home and half-way there discovered we hadn't turned the coffee pot off! So, when getting a new pot, an automatic "turn off" was essential to us. It turns off in 2 hours... and if you want to continue heating the pot beyond that, just hit the on/off switch again. It has a wonderful pouring lip that never drips, is easy to fill and clean but. of course, the most important thing to us is it makes great coffee. We whole-heartedly recommend this Black and Decker Smartbrew Coffeemaker.
Customer Review: Great For The 6 Months It Worked Summary: 2 Stars
This is a great coffee maker for the 6 months it actually worked. I will not purchase this model or any Black & Decker model since this guy had such a short life.
One down side is that is turns off after being on for 2 hours. I thought this was a great feature when I ordered it...so I never have to worry about leaving it on by accident and leaving the house. However, there are many mornings that I make coffee very early and by the time my husband is ready for a cup, the machine has turned off. Coffee snobs would say you should make a fresh pot if it has been sitting out that long...but we aren't that fussy and wish this feature could be switched on or off to suit our needs.
Customer Review: An Early Death... Summary: 2 Stars
Our kids got us this coffeemaker last year for Christmas, and it died a few days ago. I didn't use the gold filter basket (included), because the fine coffee sediment leaked through (leaving the fine grounds in the bottom of your cup...ewww!) So, I just used a typical "cupcake liner" filter. I did like the "auto shut-off" feature, and coffee taste was o.k., but it was hard to fill with water (the lid lifts off to the back, and you have to have good aim!), plus the carafe leaked everytime I poured coffee, unless I poured way too slowly. I'm disappointed that this was not a cheap machine, but only lasted a year. When I go to buy my next coffeemaker, it won't be a Black and Decker.
