Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker DCM2500B SmartBrew CoffeemakerCustomer Review: Great coffee maker for the price Summary: 5 Stars
I've used many coffee makers over my lifetime and I've come to the conclusion that I prefer the basket-type paper filter to any other. I've used cone filters and permanent gold filters.... but give me a brown paper basket filter coffee maker and I'm happy. I've had this machine about a month and so far I have no complaints, only compliments. Everything about this well-designed coffee maker is easy. Placing the carafe on the plate is a straight shot, no jiggling around to get it to fit properly. I like the top opening up to access the filter and pour in the water. All the parts are easy to clean. I like smooth, not bitter coffee, and whether I drink it extra strong or medium strength, smooth is what I get. I haven't tried the programmable settings because I grind the coffee beans and make it fresh every morning so that is not important to me. Otherwise, really, what more can you expect at any price?
Customer Review: Great for pouring and could double as morning alarm clock. Summary: 3 Stars
I have been using this appliance for just under 2 months. I bought it based on the reviews I read about how you can pour a cup of coffee without spilling. That is accurate. It does a much better job of pouring than my previous Mr Coffee machine.
However, the lid on the pot is already breaking at the hinge; typical cheap plastic molded "C" that clicks in over a plastic bar, the ends of the "C" have bent and will soon be useless.
Also, this is the loudest coffee maker I have ever owned! It makes a lot of noise from the moment it starts brewing, which continues through out the time it sits on the warming plate. It sounds like it keeps trying to brew, making loud clicking noises and sucking dry air. For me, the constant noise is quite annoying.
If you could combine the decanter from this unit with everything else from my old Mr Coffee, you'd have the perfect coffee maker.
Customer Review: Toxic danger Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased a Black & Decker DCM2500B SmartBrew Coffee maker from Amazon in September, to replace a MrCoffee that we used daily for many years. When it arrived, it was thoroughly washed and run through its brewing cycle with baking soda and clear water in the hope that the acrid plastic odor it gave off would be purged from it. It filled the house with the smell of plastic and the water that passed through it was not even potable due to the fumes.
I put the unit on our outdoor steps and let it recycle water for several hours, and let the unit sit for several weeks to air out. Then I made a pot of coffee which tasted like industrial waste. I am convinced that this is an unhealthy exposure to VOCs, and should not be used. I have thrown the coffee maker away and am now using an all-glass solution to coffee making. I will never buy another product from Black&Decker.
Customer Review: Nice replacement! Summary: 5 Stars
After 7 years, I broke the carafe for my Braun coffee maker and the replacement was about $20, so for $15 more I decided to get the Black & Decker DCM2500B instead. A basic coffeemaker is all we needed, and this one works just fine for us. The best thing about this coffeemaker is the carafe because it does not drip/leak when you pour the coffee (which was my biggest complaint with the old Braun). The worst thing about it for me is the large "lid" on the top of the machine. I have to pull it almost completely out from under the cabinet in order to open the lid and pour in the water. (However, I already expected that because of another review I read before buying.) I also don't care for the bright red clock; I'd prefer blue/green or one that doesn't light up at all. These little complaints are not a big deal to me though. Overall I really like this coffeemaker! :)
Customer Review: Good coffee -- Excellent value Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased this pot after watching the winning reviews it received on the show "Shopping Bags." Our expensive Cuisinart grind and brew pot started leaking after about 2 years and frankly it never made very tasty coffee. This pot makes very good coffee and is easy to use. The spout design is excellent. It pours easliy and does not drip or spill (problems we routinely had with the Cuisinart). Also, the water reservior has a large opening and is easy to pour water into (another problem we had with the Cuisinart). The coffee stays hot while the plate is on and the design of the lid keeps oxygen from ruining the flavor. Also, the pot is easy to clean. I've read reviews that suggest this pot won't last more than a year or two. However, at the price, we would have to go through over 5 of these pots in two years to cost as much as the Cuisinart cost us.
