Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker DCM18 Brew 'N Go Coffeemaker

Customer Review: Disappointing product
Summary: 1 Stars

I agree with other reviewers - the grounds overflow problem is a BIG problem - they go everywhere! The only thing I've found that helps is (1) be sure the top is tightly closed before brewing, and (2) switch to a heavier grind of coffee for less "float". The permanent filter is only good if you like LOTS of silt in the bottom of your cup. I tried the largest grind available, and still there's plenty of silt. I'm glad to hear others are buying #1 paper filters - I'll try that. Don't bank on this product being something Black & Decker will stand behind - I've talked to them once on the phone, and written online once, and they aren't able to help, nor do they even acknowledge the product shortcomings. They actually seem surprised at its flaws! I wish they'd have told me about the paper filters - that would have solved much of my complaints. B&D has farmed out production and service to another company who simply puts the B&D name on it. My best advice - rule this one out, and try something else. There has to be something better.

Customer Review: DIED
Summary: 2 Stars

When I first received my coffee maker it made a decent cup of coffee, worked quickly and was easy to clean. Then after about 1 month of making 1 or 2 cups a day it died. no light, nothing. Being a curious and having a technical background I disassembled mine and discovered that it has 2 thermal fuses in the heating element circuitry in contact with the heating tube. These are to prevent overheating and a possible fire hazard. I have read several reviews where owners have stated that the coffee maker turns on by itself, which, if there was no water in the coffee maker and it had no fuses, would be a definite fire hazard. One of these fuses in mine was blown and they're not replaceable. I'm guessing that it turned on by itself, with no water, overheated and subsequently blew it's fuse. I assume that's why the makers tell you to unplug the unit when it's not in use. My coffee maker is out with the trash, but I guess if you unplug it when it's not in use.......It IS an inexpensive unit.

Customer Review: On-Off switch
Summary: 4 Stars

I have never had a problem with grounds floating into the water reservoir probably because I have always used coarser gound & decaf coffee. Plus, I barely use 1 measuring scoop of coffee (the scoop is from Gevalia brand and is smaller than normal scoops)and it is guite strong. No need for too much coffee. Using the travel mug to pour the water into the reservoir seems very easy (it doesn't drip or splash) and if you want the mug to be full then add a tad bit more water and it won't overflow because of the evaporation. My unit is defective in that the On-Off switch turns OFF after brewing but then turns itself back on again after a few minutes. I was going to return it but felt unplugging it after each use is probably safer anyway. So that's what I do and all is well with my cup of coffee. As someone else mentioned, the coffee brews HOT but because of the plastic mug it cools off VERY quickly. I would recommend this product to others but tell them the shortcomings first.

Customer Review: Piece of junk, possible fire hazard
Summary: 1 Stars

I received this as a gift and it hasn't worked correctly since day 1. First of all, it does not shut off automatically, I have to actually unplug it from the wall to get it to shut off. Secondly, it immediately starts brewing as soon as water is poured in, WITHOUT turning the unit on via the switch. I don't think the on/off switch functions and I wonder why they even bothered putting it on there since the only way to control the thing is to plug it in and unplug it from the wall. This faulty switch makes me concerned about this being a fire hazard. Lastly, the space to pour water into the resevoir is so small that it's difficult to do so without spilling it all over. I called Black & Decker and they 1) didn't even attempt to troubleshoot the problems I described above and 2) wanted to charge me to send me a new unit. Overall, good idea but very poorly implemented and extremely poor quality. I hope it doesn't burn my house down as I write this review...

Customer Review: DCM18 VS. The Keurigs
Summary: 5 Stars

There is no comparison. This is 20 bucks or less, and brews GREAT COFFEE that you buy FRESHLY ground from the store (and price) of your choice.

The Keurigs are a hundred bucks and higher, and you have to buy their coffee that's been sitting there for lord knows how long, even though the date says its good until ??

Im sure the Keurigs make good coffee also, but it ain't that much better that would make me pay 5 times the price for a cup of coffee, and 5 times the price for the coffeemaker.

Besides, Keurig might have "200" flavors of coffee, but realistically, how many of those are you really gonna drink?

The neighborhood store of your choice already knows what coffee flavors tastes good, and you can grind it there yourself. As the choices at your store are already Light, Dark, French Roast, Hazelnut, Amaretto, and a few others, what more do you really need. I'll take the B & D DCM18 any day of the week.
