Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker CBM210 Stainless Steel Burr Coffee Mill/GrinderCustomer Review: Lasted only 4 months. Summary: 1 Stars
I am a spoiled coffee drinker and like it freshly ground daily. I do not splurge on anything, except my coffee. That said, I am not one to shell out a hundred dollars for a professional grinder either. I drink only one cup (maybe two) of coffee per day, and just want a simple inexpensive grinder.
I have gone through about 6 coffee grinders in the past 13 years. I've come to learn a lot about what causes basic grinders to stop working, outside of user faults. There are two main reasons:
1. Safety locks. Those fail badly. I would say most of my grinders stopped over the safety lock so-called "feature". More on that in a moment.
2. A mechanism on the inside that is designed to scrape the sides as it grinds. My best example is the Mr. Coffee Precision Coffee Grinder. When it breaks, the whole thing stops working. Yes, I had one of those and no, I wouldn't recommend it either.
I decided I would try a burr grinder for a change. I'm not a coffee connoisseur, I just wanted to see what the difference was and the truth is that I saw no difference in ground quality between this burr and a bladed grinder. They both grind just as well as the other, despite those who say a burr is superior.
My previous grinder just stopped working all of a sudden, so I was in (what I considered to be) an emergency situation. I needed one now and couldn't wait for shipping. I found this model at Target.
At first I thought I had a bargain.
* It ground up the beans well and evenly. I saw one reviewer who said they were definitely uneven. I never had that problem.
* It was super easy to use.
* It was, as mentioned before, a burr grinder.
* There was no safety locking mechanism. Most locking mechanisms fail by breaking, or wearing out which then renders the entire machine useless. I cannot STAND safety locks.
Over time though I found two main problems.
* It was very messy. Grounds often fell out when removing the canister, no matter how carefully I removed it nor if I (even slightly) shook it a bit before removal, to knock off loose grounds.
* The machine would clog, which was an irritating problem.
The clogging finally became serious enough to warrant a deep cleaning. It was taking longer to grind and it was clogging just about daily.
I still do not know what happened. I used the brush that came with the machine and used it as recommended per the manual. I did not try to force the burr off or anything (stupid) like that. I just brushed around the inside and where the grounds exited the machine. Simple right? Wrong!
Two days later, it just quit grinding altogether. There was no hope for it. Perhaps it was a coincidence, perhaps not. Either way, it was dead and I only had it for four months.
I liken this situation to the company that makes it. My last few purchases by Black and Decker have all ended quickly and very, VERY badly. I think I'm finished with the company, period. I had a B&D mixer that quit on me, I had a B&D coffee maker that quit on me as well... and both after owning for only a short period of time.
Overall, I suggest finding another one by carefully read both positive and negative reviews.
