Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker BL1900 5-Speed Blender with 48-Ounce Glass Jar, Brushed Stainless

Customer Review: Good for standard home use
Summary: 4 Stars

I've owned mine for over a year and with almost daily use (many times even twice a day) it still works as well as the first time. It's possible the harsher reviews here may be consumers expecting a commercial-quality blender. Make no mistake, this is not a Vita-Mix machine and it isn't intended to work like one. It's great for normal home consumer use and has paid for itself in my opinion.

I don't rate this a 5-star item because it does not have a smoothie "stir-stick" attachment in the top (the thing that those cheap smoothie makers have). If Black & Decker offered that attachment as an option for this blender, I would give it 5 stars.

Here are the caveats:
You have to use some common sense with the ice crushing, which can be frustrating if you expect to throw a bunch of ice cubes in and have a smoothie in seconds with no effort. I find I do have to stop the pulsing, remove the lid, and stir the ice and ingredients around many times before seeing any action (hence why the "stir stick" attachment is needed). If you let the motor continue revving without stirring the ingredients to give it resistance, the motor will burn out -- as will an $80 or $100 blender.

Also, you'll need to use a recipe (as with most blenders). If you don't put the right ingredients in there to help liquify the product and get it at a good consistency early you will have trouble. Just tossing in a bunch of fruit and ice won't blend right, won't give you the expected results, and will decrease the life of your motor.

Customer Review: Lasted about 3 months
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased the blender because it had the glass pitcher and was a rather large size but then about 3 months of using it on and off it just stopped working. I just went over to a friends house and he had the same blender and he was having the same problem except his actually would randomly work and show alot of light out of the back and then not work for along time (days) at random. So I would not recomend this blender thanks

Customer Review: Disappointment
Summary: 2 Stars

I really should know better than to buy anything without an amazon review, but blenders are no-brainers, right? Guess not!

I had a $20 blender that had a lot of use and stank of burned motor every time I tried it, though it still worked, so we got this thing. It was heavy duty, fairly expensive at $50, and its 550 W motor promised to not disappoint. We've had it for about a year and yesterday it died.

I had a large chunk of frozen smoothie I was trying to remake. Granted, that's a good bit of stress on a motor, but I really didn't feel it was insane and I wasn't ragging on the motor too badly. The motor wasn't smelling, but it was under some duress, so about half way through I turned it off to give the motor a rest. And that's the last time it ever worked. No burn smell, didn't even feel that hot to the touch, but now it will not turn on.

I've been happy with B&D products in the past, but this motor cannot handle what it should. I'm glad to see others here have had problems just so that I know it wasn't entirely my fault. I feel if a tool breaks, bad tool. This one broke, now I will spend a lot more money to get a blender I can cut stones in, because nothing is worse than a weak blender. Nothing!

And the next blender will not be a black and decker. This is the first B&D product that has ever failed me.

Customer Review: useless

this blender won't blend...if you're thinking about buying it to blend any drinks and ice, forget about it. this blender could not blend ice, i tried so many times to mix drinks for me and my girl and it only let us down. i returned it and to target and just put an order for a real blender, an osterizer the one my mother has.

Customer Review: A Good "Casual Use" Blender
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this blender for a while, and I still like it. After reading some other reviews, I just have this to add: you get what you pay for. If you want a blender for heavy daily use, then invest in something more expensive with heavy duty parts. I got this blender because I was moving into a new flat and needed one. I use it maybe a few times a month to make margaritas, salsa, or the occasional smoothie. I've never had a problem with it. The stainless steel construction has held up better than my older plastic blender ever did. The touch pad is wonderful because I don't have to scrub out gunk from button casings. So if you need a blender for casual use that looks nice on a counter-top, then this is a really good pickup. If you need to crush ice on a daily basis, upgrade to an 80 dollar blender.
