Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Back to Basics TEM500 Egg-and-Muffin 2-Slice Toaster and Egg PoacherCustomer Review: One of the best kitchen gadgets I have purchased Summary: 5 Stars
Even after reading reviews here I was still skeptical about the Egg & Muffin toaster; however, we needed a new toaster so I figured I'd give it a try. To my surprise it works just as described. The product is made better than I expected, but don't expect it to feel like a top of the line toaster. I'd say it's about average as far as quality goes. I haven't had any problem with the nonstick surface chipping, even with tossing the washable parts in the dishwasher. I use a plastic spatual to get the eggs out when they're done to avoid scratching the surface, though.
My kids said "MomMuffins" are better than McDs. The eggs come out perfect every time. Clean up is a breeze. It also makes perfect toast and bagels. I did notice, though, when warming sausage the eggs were wet. I did as other reviewers mentioned and used a papertowel to dab the moisture away. I haven't noticed it being a problem when heating precooked bacon.
My only complaint is the time it takes to make everyone an egg muffin. It would be nice to have a 4 slice model with 2 egg poachers as it would save a lot of time. I guess my only solution to that is to buy another one.
Customer Review: Wonderful! Summary: 5 Stars
This has turned out to be a terrific purchase! It doesn't take up much more space than a standard 2 slice toaster and the price is comparable to other toasters, especially when you consider the quality and the extra features. I've made hard-boiled, poached and scrambled eggs and they've turned out perfectly. Cooking time is a function of the amount of water added and the included measuring cup directs you exactly to the right amount of water needed for the degree of doneness you want. If you're making toast while your egg is cooking, the toaster part doesn't start heating until after the egg has started cooking, so everything is done at the same time. One key for cooking a poached or scrambled egg is to make sure you spray the egg pan with a bit of non-stick cooking spray. Also, before you use it for the first time make sure you follow the directions to get rid of the plastic smell -- the process is quick and it works! And the best part: it's extremely easy to clean! Most parts can go into the dishwasher. The water tray can easily be cleaned with a dab of white vinegar and a paper towel. Crumb tray slides out easily for a quick wipe-off. Highly Recommended!!
Customer Review: My life is now complete Summary: 4 Stars
Now that I have been able to toast and poach simultaneously, I can now go to my maker with a feeling of completion. No longer needing to fear those "repetitive and harrowing transitions from awakening, dressing, and travelling to work" mornings.
I wanted to mix peanut butter with an egg and see how that goes, but when I read a previous review about dripping sausage grease, I realized that I didn't yet have the Mr. Bento Stainless-steel Lunch Jar or the recommended vacuum and revolving pizza maker to make my experience complete.
Fortunately for me, we bought this lovely item for about 50 cents at a thrift store to benefit people needing hospice care.
Promise your loved ones that you will only get them this item as a gift if you know that they drive through McDonalds more than four times a week. And if you do, well don't worry, because I will be sending my friends to thrift stores across the country trying to find more of these enticing items that was so ingeniously designed to maximize my cooking ability and save my last remaining vestiges of sanity that haven't been stomped on by some 30-something marketing major.
Customer Review: Works Perfectly Summary: 4 Stars
I've been using this product for about two years and have been very happy with the results. I use it almost exclusively to make an egg/english muffin sandwich for breakfast although I have on occasion boiled eggs and made standard toast. Both worked well.
It is possible to adjust the water level (that steams the egg) to create a softer or harder center. I've done this many times.
For me, this product is ideal. Once you put the egg in the tray and the toast in the toaster part, you set it and leave it. When the toast pops up you have breakfast. In my case a muffin sandwich that I eat on the run. They also make the two egg/four toast version in the same product.
Sure I could nit pit this product. The water reservoir does become discolored and the markings are difficult to read on the plastic water cup. But hey, it works great which is most important to me.
The only reason this product didn't receive 5 stars is that the first one I bought stopped cooking the eggs in about a year. Even though I did use it 3-4 times a week a product should last longer than that. My second one is now over a year and still woking .
Customer Review: A true value Summary: 5 Stars
Our complete family is very pleased with this toaster/poacher.
Toaster:
Bread is perfect and even every time.
The Egg Poacher:
This is the part that is a wow factor. I can make a single egg soft to medium in no time and all. Or you can soft to hard boil 4 at a time in the shell in 4 to 6 minutes. Also when you cook eggs can warm up pre-cook meat or fresh fish like salmon. The meat and fish are nicely steamed.
Clean up:
The unit is easy to clean up after cook egg(s) and meat/fish.
Suggestion:
When making eggs and toast at the same time. Let the egg(s) get half done then press cancel. Put you toast, muffin or bagel in and pick combo mode. This will let have these done about same time egg completes.
This is a great gift idea for Christmas. This is one gift that you know family and friends will enjoy getting.
Also look at this product for a great start to your day.
