Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Back to Basics Cherry StonerCustomer Review: Good for a couple of pies, then.... Summary: 2 Stars
I got this cherry stoner a couple of years ago. If you are just looking to make one or two pies a year then I can recommend this one. It worked better than stoners that require you to place each cherry in a basket or ring holder and squeeze. With this appliance you will still have to check to be sure each cherry was pitted. HOWEVER, this stoner won't last or work well for the more serious cherry addict. I now have a BIG cherry tree that supplies boxes, not cups of cherries. Despite giving away several gallons, this year I was left with many cherries to freeze. This stoner was nearly worthless by the time I reached the last bucket. The biggest problem is related to its construction. There is a stainless steel plunger which rams through each fruit to eject the pit. This plunger is housed in a light weight plastic cylinder. Over time the plastic cylinder distorts and you are no longer hitting each cherry dead on. Once that happens, about 1/3 of the time, the pit remains in the cherry. Alternately the plunger sideswipes the juicy pit and wedges between the plastic surround of the pit ejection hole and the pit itself. Then the plunger will not fully retract. The only solution then is to take the whole apparatus to the sink. Sometimes warm water will loosen the wedged pit. Other times some vegetable oil must be applied. Sometimes a screwdriver jab is needed. Also, the spring which automatically resets the plunger is not much stronger than the spring in a retractable ball point pen. By the time I was done, I had to grab the plunger handle and pull upward after each stroke to reset the plunger. Due to the design, my hand is somewhat sore from pushing and pulling the plunger umptimillion times in the last week. The design does make this appliance easy to clean. Still, I must say that if this design were rendered in an all metal housing or with a better quality spring, it would be more efficient and would probably be a real "cherry" little appliance. As it is I think it is best only for those poor souls that rarely see more than a few cups of cherries per annum.
