Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Back to Basics CM300BR Cocoa-Latte Chrome 32-Ounce Hot-Drink Maker

Customer Review: I've had mine for over two years now, no problems
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this about two years ago, and I love it. I've not had any problems with it. As a matter of fact, I'm drinking my hot cocoa that I made with the machine while writing this review.

It is true that the frothy whip button doesn't work that well, but it does work for some recipes. If it doesn't work, I just add whipped cream from a can and all is well.

Cleaning it is a snap. There are instructions in the manual how to take out the spigot and cleaning it.

A warning: Do NOT immerse the pitcher into water to clean it, nor should you put it in the dishwasher. Just soap it lightly and rinse it out. The pitcher has the heating element attached to the bottom of it. You set the whole thing into the base and turn it on. It's kind of like a blender with a heating element attached to it.

I love this item, and have bought for others as gifts. Now if they could just improve the frothy whip switch, I'd give it five stars.

Customer Review: Hot Chocolate, 5 Stars

I love a hot chocolate at the end of a cold day, but usually it is chore to make and when using instant mixes, it didn't always come out quite right. But this little wonder fixes all of that.

You can use water or milk, add additional flavors (a touch of vanilla is my favorite) and let it mix and heat it for you. Now some have said this device was not hot enougth, but my tongue would disagree with that. I love the fact it will froth it up for you as you dispense it (a little extra sugar will make extra froth). Cleaning is no problem, as long as you clean it as you use it. Yes, if you wait till tomorow to clean it, you will need to scrub a little, but if you do it when you are done, no problem. Just run soapy water thru it and wipe away any choclate reisdue.

I have yet to try out other drinks with it, I don't like coffee and will wait for summer to try out the teas, but I expect it will be just as good.

Customer Review: Could be much better
Summary: 1 Stars

This item could be so much better. Prepare to spend some extra time cleaning it as it might require the use of Q-Tips to reach all of the spots. It worked like a charm the first two times, then decided to just stop working. I had milk flowing out the bottom of the pitcher, even though everything was attached properly. I got in touch with customer service and they had me return it. They sent me a new part to go with the machine, which also ended up not working. The milk was not heating up at all. So, back to customer service went a different part. After dealing with them for the third time, I just decided it was easier to give up and start looking for a better quality product. Perhaps I just ended up with a dud - and was sent parts that were all duds, who knows. Anyway, it was nice the times that it worked but I think I'll spend the money for something more reliable.

Customer Review: Was great... until it stopped working!
Summary: 2 Stars

We received this hot chocolate maker as a Christmas gift. The unit was convenient... simple to use, mixed cocoa mixes well, and served beverages hot & frothy. Unfortunately, the machine motor gave out after only a few of months of use (using it a few times per week.) My one complaint, while the unit was working, was that it was not machine washable, and was difficult to clean, by hand. The heating element is built into the pitcher, with an electrical "outlet" on the bottom... making you not able to immerse the pitcher in water.

[Update 12/30/2010] I did contact the manufacturer regarding my dead cocoa mixer, through their web site; the product does have a 1 year warranty noted in the user manual. After a few emails, and me providing a serial number & copy of my gift receipt, they did send me a new machine. Thus far, the new machine is working fine.

Customer Review: Cheaply Made Item
Summary: 1 Stars

I was excited when I got this product, but upon opening the box and using it for the first time I became highly disappointed. It is evident the cheapest materials were used in making this item. The buttons don't work well, you often have to push them hard to get them to work. In addition, the extremely short cord means your placement options are limited. Also, the poor design of the cannister prevents you from washing it well, for fear of getting the electrical component directly on the bottom wet. If these design flaws were not enough, the function of the machine also has serious flaws. The operation is extremely loud and while it mixes the drink well, it takes a long time to finish, and the drink is NOT hot when finished, it is hardly even warm. If you like to drink lukewarm cocoa or coffee you might like this glorified mixer, but otherwise stay away!!!
