This was the 1st time I'd ever seen a single cup coffee brewer, and the coffee we had from the BUNN My Cafe Home Pod Brewer is wonderful! The brewer came with a small assortment of pods - which was so nice because otherwise I'm not sure I would've known exactly what to do. None of the local stores carry pods - at least that I could find. Amazon has the best assortment as well as the best prices, and we were happy with all the different choices! The local stores all seem to carry the K-cups, and T-discs, but those won't fit in the BUNN My Cafe - which was a real disappointment because they did have some interesting coffees I would've like to have tried. Can't have everything! And the pods definately produce far less waste than either of the other 2!
When you first get the BUNN My Cafe, and are setting it up, pour water in the brewer through the top of the unit, let the water heat, and let it run out a couple of times. Some of that water remains in the unit until the next time you're going to have coffee - I've guesstimated this to be approx. 8 oz. This is okay if drinking coffee everyday, but it might be a good idea to empty the coffeemaker if going on vacation, or when there's more than a day when not drinking coffee.
After the initial setup - running the water through the unit, when you're ready to have coffee, you plug the unit in, and wait a few minutes for the water to heat. When it's ready, a small light turns green to let you know the water is hot. I'm not good with these types of appliances. I'm always doing several things at once, and generally if I'm making coffee I'm tired. By the time the water is hot enough I've often gone on to something else, and I've forgotten water was brewing! If the unit had a buzzer, or if it would just brew the coffee that would be fine, but once the light turns green, you have to push a button allowing the heated water to go through the pod & brew the coffee. If you're okay with this inconvenience the BUNN My Cafe might be fine for you!
This is a good looking appliance. It's sturdy and well made. It looks great on our countertop. The unit is a brewer only - there's no on/off switch, no clock, no auto off - should you forget to unplug it, and there's also no programmable-timer function allowing for that 1st cup of the day. You're on your own to make that 1st cup yourself. Just kidding - it couldn't be much easier - our son who just turned 8 has made me coffee. You simply decide which pod to put in the unit, pour water in the top of the unit, plug the unit in, and wait for the light to turn green. Once it turns green, for the especially bleary-eyed, there's a special function which allows you to brew a bit stronger cup. You simply push the button below the green light, and within less than a minute you'll have a nice cup of coffee, tea, or whatever you've chosen as you're preferred beverage!
I like the BUNN My Cafe - so why 3 stars? Well, for those of us who need an auto-off there goes one star! It's really a safty issue, and I think any appliance which comes out these days should absolutely have an auto-off feature! Secondly, there's no audible indicator to let you know the water is ready, or to have the choice to allow your beverage to brew w/o pushing the button! I don't want to have to push a button - I want to put the water in the top, and come back in a few minutes to coffee! I'd love to see on this brewer a clock with a programmable feature - I love waking up to the smell of coffee, and this would be a really nice feature on the BUNN - waking up to the 1st cup of coffee already made! Of course you can't have everything, but if I had a magic wand and made my coffeemaker perfect, it would be able to accomodate any of the pods/cups/or discs!
This is a nice, well made coffee maker, which makes good coffee, but is just missing what I consider a few "key" features. In a perfect coffee world! : )
