Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of BIA Cordon Bleu 8-Ounce Mortar and Pestle Set, WhiteCustomer Review: Love this thing but broke from a 18" fall Summary: 4 Stars
In all I have owned this and used it to mix herbs for incense which this is a great product for as no matter how pungent the aroma of the herbs I use it does not over power the less pungent ones as the mortar does not stain or smell like anything I use. ( if I say grind up some white sage before I grind some sweet grass or something else less pungent the stronger smell does not linger and ruin my concoction lol) the only bad thing I have found is it is not as durable as I thought it was. I have owned it for several years but never dropped it. Well today I had it sitting on the coffee table and my dogs uncontrollable tail swiped it right down onto the ground (I have hard wood floors too so it was not a super hard surface like tile or cement although it was not carpeted either. I was actually shocked when I herd it break as I have banged on this thing hard many times and it has never cracked chipped or broken like this. Currently a 3rd of the motor just kinda popped off so it is right now super glued as I can use the remaining 2 3rds for grinding and the remaining broken piece is their to keep my herbs from falling out.
In all I loved this thing so I will buy another for $10 I think its still a good deal.
Although I would like to see an item just like this but with a larger base and thicker walls. You can tell from the picture the base is not heavy at all (its more like a bowl as it does not really have a base.) and the walls are only a half in thick I think 2/3rds of an in with an inch base would greatly improve this object.
Also to those mentioning the fact that the the pestle is asymmetrical mine it is very minor and almost unnoticeable although it has served me a nice purpose. One when I finish grinding and set the pestle on the table it will not roll off and break on the floor also (even though the lip on the motor helps this) it also keeps it resting in one spot inside the mortar well without jostling around. So in all I give this 4 of 5 stars only because I believe it should have survived the short fall onto a wooden surface (albeit hard wood flooring) it is not at all as hard as cement or tile. I have dropped glass items before that did not break so it really surprised me when this happened.
Really it depends on what this product is made of when I purchased it at the store (I purchased mine at cost plus world market) and it was labeled as a soapstone mortor and pestle although here it is listed as porcelain the bottom stamp just says the brand the t it is microwave, dishwasher, and oven safe. And that is made in china so idk what it is made out of. If it was soapstone or incorporated it in the porcelain mixture I understand why it would be brittle although if it is a good porcelain it should not have broken so I am unaware the composition of this product.
Lastly I use mine for mixing leafed herbs mostly and I have found this is wonderful for that purpose although it is not very rough to grind seeds easily the way I grind seeds is to first pound them then rum them as a rubbing motion will not work well. If you have a lot of seed to grind (maybe making flour or corn meal) I would suggest a cheap granite mortar and pestle in all I believe this is one of the best for leaf grinding so if you are really into mixing your own herbs (without a food processor or something mechanized) I recommend multiple mortar and pestles as first you dont want to mix editables and non editables even in this product (I dont believe anything would linger but its better to be safe than sorry) also you would want more than one anyway for different processes and quantities but imo especially if your new this works great for leafy herbs as a granite mortar would work but you would leave a lot of it in the pores of the stone and you would lose your herbs and would then need to be washed out before more use so. For leafy or soft seeds this is perfect. And I would highly recommend.
The only thing is what I said before for some reason you can pound the #@$ out of it but if you drop it good bye so always use this on a table that it will not be knocked off. Don't use it holding in your hands unless you have a great grip because if you drop it from standing height I believe it would even break on carpet.
So my long review is over with these final comments I would and will buy another and recommend it for what it is best used for although I give it one less star as it is not as durable as I hoped. Maybe their is something better out their that is basically this item but more durable although I have yet to find one if you do buy that one lol otherwise get this one and just dont drop it lol
Description of BIA Cordon Bleu 8-Ounce Mortar and Pestle Set, WhiteThe simplest and best way to crush and grind herbs and spices. The ceramic is ttotally sealed so that it will not absorbs flavours or stain, and has a textured surface on the interior of the mortar and the base of the pestle for better crushing and grinding. The mortar has a pouring lip and a contoured bowl and base for ease of handling. Vitrified and non-porous, it will not crack, discolour or take on unwanted flavours. A mortar and pestle crush and grind herbs, nuts, and spices in a very satisfying, down-to-earth way. Both pieces are made of heavy, durable porcelain that is vitrified and nonporous so as not to absorb odors, stain, or crack. The smooth white glaze covers all but the lower interior of the bowl and the lower third of the pestle, where a textured surface takes over and aids in the grinding process. Contoured for a sure grip, the bowl holds approximately one cup, measures 4-1/2 inches in diameter, and features a pouring lip. The mortar and pestle are dishwasher-safe, and the mortar may be used in the microwave, oven, and freezer if necessary. --Ann Bieri
