Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of BD INFRAWAVE OVEN S.S. INFRARED COOKINGCustomer Review: The Instructions don't help a troublesome user interface Summary: 2 Stars
We got this B&D FC150 to replace a Panasonic NB-G100P that we loved, but that is sadly no longer available.
The Panasonic had Time & Temperature settings, as well as Frozen and Un-Frozen Toast buttons, plus Reheat for Bread and (other) Food buttons. With the buttons you could adjust the Shade from Light to Dark. This was similar to other ovens and made it easy to switch from toasting bread to frozen waffles, etc.
The Black & Decker, however, hides the Time and Temperature from you, and imposes a user interface only of use to someone who doesn't cook with an ordinary oven. Worse, the instruction manual and accompanying DVD tell you very little about how to use it. For broiling, for example, neither tells you how to set up the broiling rack; an insert to the solid trays they supply. For Pizza, both the menu and DVD fail to say that Regular defaults to frozen, while Fresh/Deli defaults to thawed. You have to read to manual to learn that.
When I called the 800 Help number, it took 30 minutes to get through to someone who thought Frozen and Un-Frozen made no difference, because they hadn't read the manual! Worse, I had to tell them about the Convert Menu button that helps translate from conventional oven Time and Temperature to B&D FC150 settings.
We may be able to use this for everything we used the Panasonic for, but with much more button pushing trouble, and that's after experimenting to learn what settings to use. Moreover, the buttons/labels are grey on black or white on grey, with an unlighted LCD display, making everything hard to read, even in moderate light.
There are two Infra-Red elements in the bottom, and one element at the top that emits bright, white, light. They seem to come on independently, depending on the button pushed (Toast, Bake, Broil differ). The Pizza, Cookies and Quick Foods buttons on the left all turn on a red indicator light over one of the Toast, Reheat, Bake or Broil buttons on the right, so the buttons on the left seem to be short-cuts to the basic functions on the right. Unfortunately, the menu options provided for them are rather limited. You won't find Blintzes, for example. We just prefer an old-fashioned Time and Temperature interface that works for everything without translation.

This Cooking oven uses specific wavelengths of light that are emitted from high-power light bulbs, which means you get instant heat with no preheating and faster results than traditional toaster ovens. You don't even have to worry about what temperature to cook at since the intelligent profiling system cycles the cooking lights according to the type of food being cooked.
