Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Avery Dennison The Original Buttoneer Fastening SystemCustomer Review: Help For The Disillusioned Summary: 2 Stars
I've been recently researching all these newer button repair tools. Recently I had a button come off a cuff of a winter coat, at a time when I had no time to repair it properly and it really pi**ed me off. (Living alone in the woods you even learn how to run a sewing machine but had no time for that either just then.) I recently got into shopping online so later that day I went in search of that "thing" I saw on TV in the 60's. I couldn't remember the name "Buttoneer", so my search lead me off into other products. (Which, judging by these reviews, was probably a good thing.) I found a device called a "1-Stitch" on ebait, one place selling a pack of 2 with fasteners for only $4.49, that price with shipping included. I recently used it. It does a pretty good job. Much better than what I've read on the reviews of this newer Buttoneer device.
It doesn't come with many black fasteners (about 100, or 200 as sold by the pack of 2 that I got, 3Xs as many translucent white nylon ones), so I went off in further research to find more of those for refills. Come to find out, this "1-Stitch" device is what is commonly sold as a "Tagging Gun" (usually always priced much higher) for putting price-tags on things. And, you can buy hundreds or thousands of new "barbs" (what they call the fasteners for tagging-guns) for pennies for refills. It appears that there are two sizes however, the standard and fine. These "1-Stitch" button and sewing fasteners appear to be for the "fine" sized tagging-gun needles. The nylon barbs (fasteners) that come included with the "1-stitch" measure about 3/8" shank-length. The tagging-gun barbs can be bought in sizes as small as 1/4" or 1/2" lengths. And much larger (1", 2", 3", etc.), as you've all seen on clothes you've bought in stores. This way you can buy different length ones for different cloth and button thicknesses, or crafting and repair needs. And, if you get a regular tagging gun, then you can use the sturdier standard barbs to fasten your winter-wear buttons and other items that require a much stronger attachment. Anyone who's ever tried to pull one of those clothing tags off of a new shirt knows just how strong the standard ones are.
One caveat, when used for buttons you end up with a larger nylon cross-bristle laying across the top of the button. (These tagging-gun fasteners being in the shape of a wide letter "H".) So before setting them (you can load them individually if you want) I take a cigarette lighter or match and carefully melt the cross-member's ends down to a size that fits to a button better and leaves smooth rounded ends on the button top so they don't scratch or catch on anything.
I hope this helps some of you people frustrated by buttons. Using a "tagging-gun", even if sold more inexpensively by the name of "1-Stitch" is a simpler, more inexpensive, more secure, more easily refillable, and all around better solution.
