Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Arrow Plastic #55 60 Cube Plastic Ice TrayCustomer Review: T O O.....T I G H T !!!!!! Summary: 3 Stars
The premise of this Arrow Plastic #55 60 Cube plastic ice-tray, is wonderful! SIXTY tiny ice-cubes on one tray! The smaller the ice cube, the quicker the drink will
melt -- and with smallish ice-cubes, as the ones this tray purports to deliver, (approxmately 1/2 inch in diametr!), the time-consuming and sometimes expensive process of creating or buying crushed ice, is totally unnecessary! A perfect ice-cube tray, one would thnk.
Only one thing is wrong here -- and it is a fatal flaw. If you turn this ice cube tray to the back, you will see that each ice-cube well is attached to the four ice-cube tray wells around it. A tiny plastic stip was incorporated into the back of the mold for this ice
cube tray, resulting in a VERY STIFF tray, indeed.
Below is an approximate illustration, (the best I can do, via com-
puter, on how two rows of ice-cube wells look on this ice-cube tray looks from the BOTTOM. (There are FIVE (5) rows of 12 wells, on the
actual tray.)

Another way too look at this. Roman legions were known for their
TIGHT FORMATION, which helped in winning battles. But -- suppose a Roman commander ordered his troops to get into TOO tight a formation. The poor guys coudn't really move much, then! Or picture a "grid-lock" of cars, on the Long Island Expressway, (often called The Long Island Depressway!), in New York -- or a grid-lock of cars ANYWHERE. The cars barely move. With these ice-cube trays, it's worse. Unless you have the strength of Hercules, twisting these too-stiff ice-cube wells, (which almost seem to be "welded" together!), is a near-impossible task!
Another ice-cube tray, the Rubbermaid 2867-RD-WHT, which I have also bought, and for which I have also written an Amazon review, twists far more easily, even though it also has "connecting welds" to some of its ice-cube wells. The difference is that only SOME of the wells have connecting, "supporters" --a few in the middle, and some on each side. This provides stability -- but also, FLEXIBILITY. Flexibility that, sadly, is truly lacking in the ice-cube tray being reviewed here. If what you want is SMALL ice cubes, I recommend the CAMCO 44100 RN Mini Ice Cube Tray, (pack of 2, $3.65). (Yes, I've also written a review of THESE trays for Amazon.) These "mini" ice cube trays will produce quite small ice cubes, indeed -- though not as small as those purpoeted to be produced in the item here being reviewed. BUT THE ADVANTAGE, (A BIG ADVANTAGE!) TO USING THE CAMCO 44100 RN Mini Ice-cube Tray set, IS THAT YOU CAN EASILY GET THE ICE-CUBES IN THEM, OUT! (Very, very easily indeed). If you really want very small ice cubes, just don't fill up the Camco trays all the way up! They are a joy to use....and space-saving, too!
There is ONE good use which I have found for the Arrow Plastic #55 60-
Cube Plastic Tce Tray. At least for me -- and those who, like me, like to BOIL water first, then let it cool down a bit, before filling ice-cube trays. Boilt, cooled-down water is better water...a variation on "Home Made Distilled Water". (Fill up a gallon glass jar with tap water, let it sit for 24 hours or more, then use only the top half for drinking. Flouride and heavy metals sink to the bottom of the bottle...& you have pure, distilled water -- without the expense of buying a water distiller!) Nope -- I haven't been watching 'MONK' too much....many people do this...really! Ahem....anyway, sometmes the hot water one pours into ice-cube trays, (after boiling and cooling), is still a little TOO hot. Putting hot water-filled ice cube trays into the freezer can bend them into an ultimately unusable convex shape, (think--tent shape!) So, it's good to let the water REALLY cool off. Allowing trays to remain uncovered, however, invites dirt, (and perhaps germs), to settle in the water. But the Arrow Plastic #55 60 Cube Plastic Ice Tray -- almost impossible to use AS an ice-cube tray, is, however, a PERFECT
C O V E R I N G, for OTHER ice-cube trayss, (such as the Rubbermaid and Camco trays, described above. Just turn it over, so the back of the tray is facing you. And -- there you have a perfect covering, to keep out dust and dirt, whilst the water in the OTHER ice-cube trays
is getting cold enough to put in the freezer!
Maybe there are cheaper ways to cover one's ice-cube trays, whilst waiting for water within them to get cool enough to put these other ice-cube trays into the freezer. But if you've already bought the Arrow Plastic #55 60 Plastic Ice Tray, here is a perfect use for it....and you can feel you haven't wasted (all) your money, buying it, after all!
