Customer Review: Fine for a $35 scale, but not much more

Hello, I have some American Weigh scales (Not this model) from 1-3 years old. The auto shut off on them IS annoying, but I suppose I could deal with it. This really depends on what you are weighing. For example if you have everything all laid out and just weigh one after another, or just want to weigh one thing now and then - no problem. But this is not my case: I like to use it while making recipes and also while mixing things in my "shop". It is definitely a problem for that use and is lacking a switch to turn off auto shut off. The fact that this scale is so much more costly (we assume for the capacity) makes this a maybe...but my experience with the 1000x0.1 and 600x0.1 scales by the same brand tells me that the other negative comments regarding the cheap LCD readout are spot on. Both of my scales suffered this lightening of the LCDs to the point that they were not readable unless you getdown to eye-level with light properly reflected. Both previously started good and developed the problem after a year or so of use. To bad this seems to suffer from the same cheap parts. Too expensive to risk it. Will look for a low-end Sartorious (sp.), or just another brand to gamble with. Be careful with the brands out there. AmericanWeigh and several others are all from the same Chinese factory. If it looks identical it probably is. Oh the problems with auto shut off is that if you are weighing two things you are comparing and you have a shut off in between them you can't be sure that they are tared or zeroed properly, this can be a gross change if you are not watching carefully or some very small amount which you won't necessarily catch even if you watch what you do. Another reviewer used a reference weight - really that is the only way to be sure. You don't need to know the weight of it in that moment, just have it reproducable when comparing two weights (calibration is a different issue precision vs. accuracy) But the 0.1 g is probably more wishful thinking, anyway. The cheap pressure sensors in these aren't certified or anything, though usually they get it to within a half gram. Which is just fine for kitchen use, but many of us use them when we should really use a scale "good for trade". Like to describe something's weight on eBay, etc. That is why I am not giving it a one star rating. It does its minimum requirement, but the cheap LCDs are really a negative for all users.
