So far, this thing has worked like a champ, helping me find hidden nails and staples in reclaimed lumber. I only use it after I've visually inspected the boards and removed any nails/staples that I find. It has found 4 nails that were buried in the reclaimed lumber to the point that I couldn't see them. As others have reported, the device only gives you a general vicinity of the object that it senses. I used a small rare earth magnet to narrow down the search for the hidden nails. With the magnet, I was able to substantially narrow down the search area, enough to find the nails with a little digging with my shop knife.
This thing will save me a lot of grief with avoided damage to my jointer and planer and handplane blades. I may buy another, just to have a spare.

scanned over 100 BF of salvaged lumber and pulled out a lot of nails and bits of metal. the only problem is that sometimes its hard to narrow down exactly were the pieces were if they were buried. i found that if i held a powerful magnet in my fingertips and ran it over the area i had narrowed it down to, that i could feel the pull on the magnet once it was over the metal. that seemed to work great. all other metal detectors are way more expensive, i am not sure why since the technology is very simple. this one works great, especially if you are the kiond of person that only needs it every once in a while and the more expensive ones just aren't worth it.Customer Review: Beware of reviews

This product works somewhat as described. The area of the detector that acrually scans is very small. I purchased this item because Rockler (and
most everyone else) was out of the Lumber Wizard and the reviews of this item seemed so positive. After re-reading the reviews, it seems some could have been written by the same person. (You'll notice two seperate people have dads who like STUFFS. In other words, beware of the reviews.

Not as sensitive as I'd like. I use it to check for metal buried in reclaimed wood. It doesn't work past about 1/2" deep which has caused me to trust a couple of pieces of wood that later ruined my band saw blades. It's really best for nails and staples near/on the surface which can be found with careful visual inspection alone. Limited usefulness.Customer Review: it really works

I doubt the quality when I saw the price. I decided to give it a try since it is offered at amazon and I never had problem returning if I don't like it. The metal detector turns out to be much better than I thought. It can detect very tiny metal hidden on the floor. I bought a couple more again.
