Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Air-O-Swiss AOS Ultrasonic Humidifier - 7135Customer Review: Air-O-Swiss Model 7135 Summary: 5 Stars
You'll be extremely impressed the first time you see vaporized mist emitted from this unit. The unit itself is of very good quality, given its plastic construction. Although it includes an ionic silver stick and a filled deminerialization cartridge, be sure to purchase the cartride refills rather than new filled cartridges. It will save you a lot of $$$.
The 600 sq. ft. room area coverage appears questionable. It is a valid estimate if you turn OFF your furnace, which drys the air, and allow this unit to do its job. The output of dry furnace air in a typical bedroom will overpower the output of this unit.
It was difficult to maintain 55% humidity in a 300 sq. ft. room with the furnace ON when the ambient humidity level was 25%. And this was with the unit's fan running on maximum speed. The jury is still out on this issue, as I only purchased the unit yesterday.
Expect to change the water once every 10 hours if you run the unit at maximum speed and have it set to provide 30% humidity over ambient (i.e. have the unit set to 55% because room humidity is 25%.)
And yes, the unit is made in Switzerland. The heater will provide 104 degree F mist. However, that warm mist cools down immediately after becoming ejected. In other words, the mist is somewhat cold once it mixes with the air. However, it appears to reduce temperature drops as advertised.
The bottom line...a little pricey, (...). The manufacturer might prohibit selling this item below retail cost in their vendor contract. I would recommend getting one. However, do not expect this unit to provide an abundent level of humidity during those cold, dry winter nights when your furnance is kicking on every 20 minutes.
Customer Review: Great Humidifier! Summary: 5 Stars
Looking for a humidifier that really puts out the moisture, is easy to clean, and is QUIET? You might consider this one!
My family had tried a warm-mist humidifer before. We liked the output of moisture, but got serious "scaling" in the filament - ultimately making it unusable.
Next, we tried the cold-mist models - but were unimpressed with the noise and low moisture output.
Finally, after my wife's hands kept cracking from dry skin, we decided to look for another "warm-mist" humidifier.
I checked around and found the Air-O-Swiss model.
Talk about moisture - we were concerned at first about too much moisture. Then we figured out that it evaporates soon after leaving the device.
It is quiet and has a hygrometer (humidity sensor) that really seems to work.
The unit works on ultrasonic vibration to atomize the water - so it doesn't "heat it up" - you get a "cool fog". You can turn on the "pre-heater"; however, that warms the fog up so you don't feel like you are in London on a cold, wet day!
Did I say this unit is quiet?
You purchase demineralizing canisters that filter the water. Also, you can buy an anti-microbial stick to help eliminate germs.
I was surprised to see some pink film in the water base after a couple of weeks of use. Tis was easily addressed with a soft brush (provided) and vinegar (per the instructions).
We go through the whole tank on dry nights. Humid nights might consume a half tank. The unit shuts down automatically when the tank runs low.
We've been very impressed thus far and recommend it to others who are looking for an outstanding warm-mist-like humidifier.
Customer Review: Excellent humidifier Summary: 5 Stars
There are a lot of great reviews of this product, and I won't bore you all with a long redundant review.
Just a few things; the 7135 is efficient, quiet, and I personally feel a huge improvement in comfort level when I walk into the room for which I bought this. My skin feels better, I feel better. I keep it set a 45%.
As for the white dust issue, a friend of mine to whom I recommended this product has had absolutely no issues after about a month. He had a very nice piano and I suggested it to him for obvious reasons. I however, did experience the white dust. After 2-3 days of use, I needed to wipe down everything in a 10' radius. The filter system may be doing it's job correctly and well, but for my water supply, not well enough.
I solved this problem to switching to distilled water. After almost a week using distilled water, there is absolutely no trace of white dust. I don't mind buying distilled water, as I will only be using this humidifier 3-4 months out of the year. Please understand also, it isn't that this particular humidifier has this issue, any humidifier will have this issue to deal with. You're introducing water, and all of the minerals within it, into the air.
As for finding distilled water, it can be easy or difficult, depending upon where you live. In some areas Target, WalMart, places like that have it. Not here by me in North New Jersey. I was able to find distilled water for 89 cents per gallon at PathMark.
I use two gallons per day, less expense per day than a plain coffee at Starbucks. Once I looked into the health benefits of a properly humidified environment, I was extremely comfortable with the decision.
All the best,
-Mike
Customer Review: the best on the market Summary: 5 Stars
I have just ordered a second one after being satisfied with my first purchase.
It is expensive: in fact, more than five times more expensive the $30 Vicks Warm Mist. But it is the Cadillac and it is the best on the market.
Obviously Air-O-Swiss has analyzed all the shortcomings of previous models of their own and of their competitors when designing the 7315, and has addressed most of the problems.
The cost, of course, is the high price tag. :-)
This humidifier is very quiet, you won't even notice it at night. You can choose cool or warm steam, and you can set a target humidity. The competitors have the same features, but Air-O-Swiss deliver them more reliably and more effectively.
Maintenance is easy because of the expensive and powerful filter and other antibacteria features adopted by this humidifier. In other words, the upfront investment is high but it will pay off in the long-term.
I also own a $30 Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier, which boils the water instead of using Ultrasonic to create mist. I am happy with the Vicks too. However, I think the Vicks serves a different purpose: it is cheap and it does the job with a reliable mechanism (boiling) and without any fancy features; you can buy five of them for the cost of one Air-O-Swiss; and you can throw them away when they get clogged up after a season. I would consider the Vicks as disposables.
The bottom line: If you are willing to spend $170 and you want absolutely the best and the most reliable, then you won't be disappointed by an Air-O-Swiss!
Customer Review: Works well - could be better Summary: 3 Stars
I bought one of these about 6 months ago. It humidifies the air well. It keeps my nose/throat from drying out. My wife and I have not caught any cold or fever since, and I attribute this to the humidifier keeping our nose/throat healthy. However, there are several drawbacks one should know:
1) It dribbles a bit when lifted off the stand to refill.
2) The shape is odd and hard to fill upside down, and it's overall a bit cumbersome to refill unscrewing the large cap underneath. It needs to be refilled every 2 nights in our case.
3) It gurgles, loudly at times when it gets low on water. A few times, I thought someone snuck into our bedroom.
4) It leaves a white dusting on surfaces, especially on our Sony CRT TV glass. It did this a little at first, but recently got much worse. I suspected the de-mineralizing cartridge needed to be changed.
I had just cleaned the unit per the directions and bought new cartridges. After a week, the unit quit working entirely - not even a led light comes up on the panel. After some attempts to service myself, I am going ahead and buying another since I have invested both in new silver and de-mineralizing cartidges and can use the old one for spare parts. I figure I can use both water tanks and not refill until every 4 days and double the cartridge life. I am also thinking to drill a hole in the old top to prevent gurgling and allow refilling while still on the stand.
I think it's a good product, especially if it allowed refilling on the stand and didn't gurgle, and I'll be sure and keep the receipt this time in case this unit dies.
