Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Air-O-Swiss AOS Ultrasonic Humidifier - 7135

Customer Review: Never, ever buy an item from Amazon that is provided by FACTORY DIRECT
Summary: 1 Stars

I do not understand why Amazon -- which we have used for a long time -- would ever use FACTORY DIRECT. It is a rip-off company that only sends products after a long wait (e.g. 25 to 30 days!) while lying and telling you that it is on the way. Amazon also sends emails saying the product has been shipped.

I'm not going to go into a whole long story about our ordering several of these humidifiers for an emergency construction situation -- only to discover that they were finally delivered about 25 days after ordering (even though Amazon said they had been shipped way before that date)and after the construction was completed and the humidifiers no longer needed.

We were in constant touch with Amazon Customer Service -- sending them copies of all email correspondence verifying the problem. The outsourced Amazon CS reps kept saying the problem was being taken care of -- but we were constantly getting an invoice on American Express for $790! -- though we had received NOTHING -- absolutely NOTHING.

It was a nightmare -- and thanks only to American Express -- the problem was resolved. For this experience alone, we will never ever use another credit card except Amex and it has made us wary of trusting that Amazon will send items from a reputable provider.

The problem was finally -- after many months settled -- meaning we finally did not have to pay anything for receiving nothing.

IF YOU SEE THAT A PRODUCT IS BEING SENT/OFFERED, ETC BY FACTORY DIRECT -- go elsewhere. They are an amazing example of cheats, liars, and thieves.

BTW: we later looked at reviews re Factory Direct and found so many responses that reflected exactly our experience. From this experience, we have learned not only to look at reviews of the product but also at reviews of the provider of the product. Amazon should not be working with such a sleazy provider as FACTORY DIRECT.

Customer Review: Ultra-quiet, ultra-effective humidifier.
Summary: 4 Stars

The Air-O-Swiss 7135 is the quietest humidifier I've ever used. Other than a very slight fan hum (due to the active humidity level monitoring of this unit), it is perfectly silent while operating. It has also proven very effective in maintaining proper humidity levels, and with options for hot or cold mist, this is sure to please.

Two gripes follow:

First, I bought this unit as I was tired of constantly purchasing moldy wick filters in other models, which were also very loud. Although quiet and without such wick filters, you will regularly pay for a submersible water filter and, less frequently, an ionizer that sits (rather unceremoniously) in the bottom of the unit. If you're expecting to be out of the woods in terms of ongoing consumable cost with this humidifier, this isn't the one. The exception would be to not purchase either the water filter or the ionizer, but expect a layer of white dust all over your room. The picture of this item cleverly does not show the filter, which is about the size of a soup can and is readily visible inside the water tank on the lower right side. This filter also reduces the volume of the water tank.

Secondly, this thing couldn't possibly be more inconvenient when it comes time to fill the water tank. The filler cap is on the bottom of the tank, and is attached to the soup-can-sized water filter. After unscrewing the cap and carefully pulling out the attached filter, the tank is ready to fill. The bad news - there is no handle to hold on the bottom while filling! You're forced to hold the tank inverted, with your hand clasping the handle from the top of the unit, while balancing the tank (and its rising water level) on your wrist.

Bottom line - a very effective and quiet humidifier with easily-customizable settings, but still carries the ongoing costs of other humidifiers and is a pain to fill.

Customer Review: Air-O-Swiss 7135 - could be better
Summary: 4 Stars

Looked at and tried other models but finally settled on this one. I've read different opinions on how long the unit will run on a full tank of water. For me, I need to fill it every night. 'Course it's very dry here in New Mexico and running the heat only makes it worse. The unit does a good job of putting out moisture.

Likes: I can have cold or warm mist. I like the mist "spout" that I can move to aim at different parts of the room. It's a bit pricey but it works. My throat doesn't get dry during the night. My skin is not as dry. I think it has also helped with my recovery from pneumonia.

Dislikes: It's kind of a pain to fill the reservoir. Why can't they put a cap on the TOP of the tank instead of the BOTTOM? Not a show stopper but it'd be easier to handle if I didn't have to flip it over after filling. Setting the desired humidity is a joke. Don't expect the unit to run based on the humidity level you set on the unit. From the reviews I've read, sounds like this is a standard complaint. I really don't care that it doesn't work perfectly. I go by "sight" on how much mist I want to come out of the unit. It only took a couple nights to get it set to "my" comfort level. I do get some white powder residue in the room. Not bad but it's there. We have hard water. I could use distilled but 3.5 gallons a day would get expensive and be a pain. I'll just wipe away the powder. The filter is supposed to prevent this... for me, it doesn't.

Do your research and buy what you need. There's a bunch of humidifiers out there. Determine why you need one and what options you want... it should narrow your choices down significantly. For me, I narrowed it down to the AOS 7135 and the Venta VS 207. Since Venta 207 has been discontinued, the AOS 7135 won.

Customer Review: I LOVE THIS THING
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned a variety of warm air humidifiers over the past several years and have hated every one of them giving the awful experience of trying to clean the mineral buildup from the boiler. Then I came across the Air-O-Swiss 7135 on Amazon and carefully read the user reviews which convinced me to buy one and try it. I have been using the humidifier for two months now and I too will give it a five star rating.

This thing is wonderful, build quality is excellent, the controls on the front are easy to understand and use. Every two weeks or so, a light on the unit comes on to remind you to clean it. When I go to clean the unit, I can find absolutely no mineral buildup or residue of any kind from the San Diego tap water I use in it. That's not to say that San Diego has clean water, it just means that the mineral cartridge is doing an excellent job of removing the minerals from the water prior to dispensing the fine mist. (NOTE: You absolutely MUST soak the mineral cartridge for twenty-four hours before the first use. Do not take this lightly; the mineral cartridge needs this time to activate in order to do its job).

My wife and I immediately noticed a dramatic difference in our sleep quality the first night of use. No longer did we wake up with a dry mouth or nose. There is no white dust anywhere which has been a problem on inferior humidifier models and you do not have to worry about harmful bacteria or viruses taking up residence since the humidifier uses a stick of silver to kill the little darlings.

I love the unit so much; I just purchased a second one this week to use elsewhere in the house.

If you are on the fence about getting this unit, do not wait any longer, get it now, you will not be disappointed.

Customer Review: Best Humidifier I Have Used
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased my Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic Humidified 7135 at BB&B (you must find those 20% off coupons).

Pros:
- Almost silent operation. I barely hear the thing.
- Sturdy craftsmanship. The base is solid as is the refill tank and handle.
- LCD Readouts are easy to see and not overly bright at night.
- Controls are very easy to set.
- Heater option. Having warm mist is great.
- Filter refills aren't as expensive as some other units. You can buy the filter grains separately from the filter canister (also sold at BB&B).

Cons:
- Would prefer a bigger water reservoir. I have to fill mine daily almost.
- You have to unscrew the filter every time to fill the unit. They should have made a separate filling hole.
- Cleaning isn't hard but my unit seems to tell me to clean it way too often. The tiny brush that comes hidden away in the base is a joke. It won't scrub anything.
- Big rooms may require a bigger unit (or two of these).
- Hard to clean the reservoir inside. It is one solid piece, you cannot get inside.

Overall this has been the best humidifier I have owned to date. I would highly recommend this one to anyone in the market for one.

Update: Purchased in Winter of 2007, now coming up Winter 2010 and the unit is not working. I had used it very sparingly all year and did a thorough cleaning. I do not know if water leaked into the housing of the electronics but I never had a problem before. The LCD panel no longer works.

I never had any leaking problems, and very little of the dust problem.
