I've used the test strips for years, but have been getting odd, yes - that's the right word, odd results from my big tank (125 gal.) lately. Also, the fish die offs. Something is weird in there!
So, time to get another type of test kit to verify what the strips are saying. Needless to say, stocking that thing with fish ain't cheap. It seems the pH is out of whack on the high side. Yup, who'd have thunk it. Fish poo and corpses shouldn't raise pH that much, something else is raising it. OK fine, time for new bio-wheel filters (staged introductions of course) and stuff.
This test kit was easy to use, but not easier than the test strips. On the other hand, the "high PH" test came in very handy for me.
Incidentally, everything coming from a tap around here has pH around 8 and my home filter system drops it to a nice 7.0 value. I do weekly 20 gal water changes and keep the fish biomass low for a tank this size. Oddly, the hardness of the tank water is pretty good so the tank is obviously buffering rather nicely to keep that high pH value. Maybe it's the substrate. So, I've decided to buy fish that like a slightly higher pH range. I'd been trying to keep a big school of neon tetras (which prefer lower pH) with occasional success.
