Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of 9-in. Unicorn Magnum Plus Pepper Mill, Black.

Customer Review: Over 5 years later, I still love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

Although this mill is currently unavailable on Amazon, the company's website shows that Unicorn is very much in business and still offering the Magnum Plus. I purchased mine through Amazon over 5 1/2 years ago, after going through several unsatisfactory mills. A few minutes ago, while in the kitchen refilling the mill's generous reservoir, I thought about how much we've enjoyed using it and what a good product it's been. I won't reiterate the features of this pepper mill; others, including Nina, have done a fine job of that. My only disagreement with Nina's review is a minor one: I don't object to the mill's looks. I've found its appearance, heft, and performance to be just what I want for daily use. This pepper mill is holding up well with regular use by lovers of fresh-ground pepper. If/when we have to replace it, I'd definitely buy this one again, or, if unavailable, another similar mill made by Unicorn.

Customer Review: I can't believe it's this good . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

. . . but it is! I've never had a peppermill in this style be a great product. Either they're difficult to turn, or the grind isn't variable, or their output is negligible. This one, however, puts out more pepper in two turns than most do in six or eight. I bought it after a wonderful, automatic peppermill I bought on Amazon died. It was perfect--until it broke within only nine months. It was very expensive, and I never thought I'd ever find a decent peppermill. We buy excellent corns and need a machine which will grind them to perfection.

Along came Cook's Illustrated to recommend the Unicorn Magnum Plus. I didn't trust the review, frankly, but by that point, I would have tried anything. Et voila! It works. It's perfect. It's half the price of an automatic one and twice as good. I'm going to buy another one for white pepper. Take a chance on this one. You won't be disappointed.

Customer Review: It doesn't get any better than this
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this pepper mill. I must admit when I saw my favorite chefs (Alton Brown and the folks at Cooks Illustrated) with one I had to have it. Then I saw the price tag and thought they were all crazy. How could a $45 pepper mill be worth it? After a few months of eyeing it suspicously in the store, I broke down and got one. I have no regrets -- it is worth every penny.

I love its size; you fill it once and you're set for a year. It's easy to adjust the grind. I don't think you can get the finest grind ever out of it, but you'll get close. You get a good deal of output from it, which is probably its best feature. It's also easy to use and clean. Lastly, it just looks cool.

As with all pepper mills -- this one leaks, but not any more or less than others. I store it on an upturned lid from a can of baking powder.

Customer Review: Lots of pepper
Summary: 5 Stars

If you like fresh ground pepper and lots of it this is the peppermill of your dreams.

October 4, 2009 Well I have had my peppermill for almost a year and I still LOVE IT. Someone in a different review said that it was hard to fill, but if you will lay it on it's side and use a funnel, being careful not to over fill it so you don't spill when you turn it upright, it is easy to fill. If a recipe calls for a tablespoon of pepper just grind on a paper plate and pour into the spoon, in very few grinds you are done.

The only thing I have found that I don't like is this. The knob on top is smooth I have small hands and find it a little hard to get a grip, sometimes my hand slips. And don't bother if your hand is wet or greasy from cooking. So make sure that your hands are dry.

Customer Review: 99.999% Perfect
Summary: 5 Stars

To think that I had been suffering the inadequacies of my previous, very expensive... $80++ as I recall... pepper mill for over 10 years, thinking it was the best I could do...

Then I saw this pepper mill reviewed on America's Test Kitchen... so I decided to test it.

Amazing. It holds a ton of peppercorns, but more importantly it grinds them perfectly. This is a precision instrument.

Just be a little careful on your first use of it. It puts out a LOT of pepper with just a few twists. My first use opened my eyes.... WOW! ... this is really more than just good. You have to try it to believe it.

And for a very reasonable price. I recommend it without hesitation.
