Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of 9-in. Unicorn Magnum Plus Pepper Mill, Black.Customer Review: finally, a well designed pepper mill Summary: 4 Stars
I was skeptical about this product having read the negative reviews which warned about the fill feature opening while grinding resulting in the contents flowing or even being tossed wildly out on to the floor, table, plate etc.
I went ahead and bought it anyway, actually two because I got a salt mill as well.
I believe that one needs to be deficient in the ability to descern spacial relationships, operate simple mechanical instruments, or as one reviewer suggested, just too drunk to accidentally open the fill feature while turning the grinder top. If that is your hesitation about buying these mills, but you do not feel that you have difficulty in general with simple kitchen implements, go ahead and make your purchase.
My personal reservation is that while they looked quite sleek online, I actually found them rather plasticky looking in real life. If you have a rustic kitchen like I do you might want to keep that in mind. As far as function goes, they work very well, and I am quite happy with my purchase. After having gone through several pepper grinders over the years, I hope that these are as durable as they promise to be.
Customer Review: overrated pepper mill Summary: 1 Stars
Purchased this peppermill based on recommendation by Cook's Illustrated mag--I love their reviews of products. I received this peppermill last week and promptly returned--it is slippery to grasp if your hands are the least bit wet or have any oil on them. It's super easy to fill and holds a lot of peppercorns, but I didn't care for the quality and quantity of the grind. It is very easy to adjust the size of the grind, but the mechanism didn't move very smoothly. Update: I returned the item (and paid for the shipping charges to return) and Chef Tools will not take it back because I used it (put a few peppercorns in it to test it)--how else does a consumer know if they are satisfied with the performance of a product unless they try it? i guess I should have washed it out more thoroughly. Not only did I pay for the shipping charges to return to ChefTools, they have informed me that they won't take the product back and will be happy to send it back to me, but I have to pay $6.99 in shipping charges again. $6.99 to have it shipped to me; $6.99 to send it back, and now $6.99 to get it back from ChefTools.
Customer Review: Very good but with design flaws Summary: 4 Stars
For many years I've used a Perfex mill for black pepper and part of a set for white pepper. The Perfex is excellent but I was attracted to this pepper mill by its good looks and positive reviews.
It grinds up a pile of pepper in a hurry because its large (27 mm diameter) mechanism allows more peppercorns to be ground at once. Its coarse to medium grind is excellent overall as compared to the Perfex, but a fine grind could not be obtained with the unit I purchased. Some fine tuning of the machining or design of the mechanism is needed by its Italian creators.
The problem with the fill hole ring opening accidently can be fixed by redisigning the ring and mill body so that there is a detent to help keep the ring in the closed position more firmly.
Finally, the whole thing slips in wet or oily hands too easily. It would be good to have a fluted surface for the cap for a better grip.
The Unicorn Magnum is used for black pepper most of the time, but I prefer the Perfex for white because of its superior fine grind.
Customer Review: Lays waste to peppercorns with ease. Summary: 5 Stars
Got it as a gift. Fills easily (holds a TON of peppercorns). Adjusts easily from fine to course and you don't need to keep tweeking it. One twist up or down and uniformly changes the size of the output. One full twist will sling a lot of pepper (I use a lot) so I use about a half turn for a meal, two for a dish. It looks nice and feels sturdy. The output side is on the bottom so you sometimes get few grains of pepper on the counter or wherever you store it. The price is up there but I will never again stand over a saute pan spinning a filled store-bought grinder 30 times to get the same output as I get with two twists on this beast. And all the pepper is approximately the same size--you can sling some dust and then throw a few chunks on top on the first try. I may buy another (or two) for different pepper blends. Highly recommended--I will be gifting these to family at upcoming birthdays. Oh and it looks good and wipes clean (even with greasy fingerprints)--impressive for plastic, all the internals seem to be made from metal.
Customer Review: Simply amazing! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, so I've gone through about 15 pepper mills over the 35 years I've been cooking. Small, large, wood, plastic... almost every shape and design imaginable. I have now had this pepper mill for 5 years and it has never failed me once. It is by far the best mill I have ever owned. While not the sexiest looking and perhaps a bit more difficult than some in filling, it grinds like no one's business. It holds a huge amount of pepper so filling is seldom to begin with. The biggest plus is the quantity of pepper ground per twist. That is something you have to get use to as it grinds about two times the pepper per twist when compared to other grinders. It also has a grind adjustment on the bottom which if you are going to a larger grind, is no problem. However, if you are going for a smaller grind, turn it upside down and twist once or twice so that the adjustment mechanism doesn't get stuck on the previously larger pepper. It is an amazing tool. The grind consistency is awesome as well. I will never go back to anything else.
