I have had my Berkey for 2 years and probably do not change the filters enough. I only filter water that is already supposed to be clean, but I do not trust the local water supply. I don't get real paranoid about it and still rinse food with tap water. I use the Berkey for drinking and most cooking, tea, etc. It is a very simple system and I keep a spare set of filters. I change my filters at closer to 1000 gallons than 3000. I am also going to add the PF-2 filters, which I should probably use already.
Berkey has priming instructions, but the replacement filters have much simpler instructions. Just install the new filters, being careful to keep the outlet end clean and fill the Berkey. Empty the fill then refill. The filters have been purged and prime. I suggest a 5 gallon bucket to drain the rinse water and I use this water for dishes or mop water or something similar.

We live in rural Alaska and the water here is full of iron, not to mention other metals, but iron is the worst. There are times when the water that comes out of the faucet is orange or brown. We have used this water filtration system for 4 years. I am confident in saying that the filters make the water drinkable. I am not sure of the % of metals it removes, but I do know that once our water is filtered it does not smell like iron, it is not orange, or brown, and it tastes clean. If you want to purchase filters from a company who excels in customer service then please purchase from Dan @ H2O Filters. We had an issue (no fault of Dan's or his company) that came up and he did everything in his power to work with us. That makes such a difference let me tell you.
